Hello guys,

Recently I've been busy and haven't frequented the forums as much as I usually do, I want to catch up, as I've seen a lot of questions directed at the devs.

If you ask a question in the comments section of this news post, you'll get an answer. I'll attempt to answer every comment, as long as the question isn't too stupid.

How do you make weapons?

You write code, draw graphics and record sound.

What is your personel target in the future of Hegewars ?

To build a fun and competative game that we can grow a community around. To keep expanding on the genre with original concepts and implementations, and to please our fanbase with fun updates.

Oh, I have a real question, is there any way to update old demos (say, hwd_23) to work in a later version of HW? Are you interested in settling on one demo format, and have newer versions of the game use old rules when playing old demos?

Old demos cannot be replayed with newer engine versions, because they are mostly like a part of engine than just a set of instructions on hedgehogs moves. Format of demos hasn't changed for a long time.

Please make new sound themes appeared in 9.10+ a bit louder

Now seriously: What are the plans for next weapons to be implemented?

Planned next is the portal gun, as it came second place in the poll, and we've already implemented our version of the "jetpack" the flying saucer. After that, we'll see, there are lots of ideas floating around

I've been further even more decided to use even go need to do look more as anyone can. Can you really be far even as decided half as much to use go wish for that? My guess is that when one really been far even as decided once to use even go want, it is then that he has really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like.

Well, yeh, but mostly because it took him 3 years or something to make the engine (at least he said so in a thread in the forum), which is no need to say hell of a long time and it's not worth the effort to develop something for example 2 years and than suddenly switch to something totally different, 'cause Pascal is very different from C++.

Any ideas roughly when 0.9.12 will be released? Days, weeks, months?

after the turnament ?!

they cant make an update with new thing in a running turnament match.

0.9.12 will hopefully contain.

1. A flying saucer weapon (done)
2. a portal weapon (not done)
3. Announcer (done)
4. Drowning animations (done)
5. steam (done)
6. explosive barrels (code done, needs art)
7. New map (more or less done)
8. zooming in and out with mouse wheel (about half done)
9. Stats etc (some work done, fair bit to do)
10. some graphics updates (done some, but I can always do more)
11. Fire rework (not done, but shouldnt take long, easy)
12. Napalm strike rework (not done, but again quite easy)
13. Maybe some other stuff, or things I've forgotten
14. Technical changes to move over to openAL/some iphone stuff (done)

When all of these are complete and tested, we'll release. We won't release during a tournament, and it's going to take a few weeks to get these things done. We don't set dates or have targets, so I can't give you one, I can just say a few weeks.

Some time ago I also read here something about the upcoming "piano" weapon. What will it do? When it will be released?

Will there be new graphical themes in next release?

@azumanga, I believe so. I'm new to HW, but still each of the last releases has new maps and themes.

Assuming we can get everything working as intended, the portal gun will give you two shots, like a shotgun. But it won't end your turn. It fires 2 orbs at the terrain, the first orb opens an orange portal on the terrain at the point and angle at which it hits the terrain, the second orb does the same with a blue portal. Once both portals are in place, jumping through one portal will make you fly out of the other, maintaining your momentum as you go. It will also allow you to throw projectiles through the portals, and knock enemy hogs through portals.

There are no new graphical themes yet, but there might be some by the time we release.
There are some new maps already though.

My offhand bet is he has same problem as a couple of other users, he doesn't realise that clicking on the map button not only generates a random map, but randomises crates and hedgehog position, so if you want to play same map with new positions, you have to click on the map button first.

maybe this:

Will there be possble to assign spawning points for fort mode and drawn maps?

eg.some brackets with x,y coordinates in map.cfg ?

This next release looks like it's going to be the best yet. The portal gun will be completely amazing Big Grin .

One question that I have is do you have any plans to re-work the frontend? IMHO it could do with a bit of a tidy-up and a refresh.

I've checked - looks you're right. Thanks for explanation, I didn't knew that. But anyway, I think there should be easier way to get placement randomized. Maybe new button ? And what about showing hedgehog placement in map preview ?

Not just yet, we're focusing on perfecting the network game right now, as we think it's probably one of the more important parts of the game.

That said, we do have plans for the AI.

First of all, we want to eventually include single player missions in the game. These missions will give you set goals, it might be collecting a crate, killing all opponents, killing them a certain way.. there are lots of things we could do here.

Next, I want to enable these missions to be played online, cooperatively! So you can try and "complete the game" with your friends.

Third, I want the mission editor to be very simple, and missions will be contained in very small text files, what this means is, you will be able to download new missions directly from the netserver, without us updating the game, and then play those new missions with your friends. Perhaps we'll have a new mission every week or so?

Fourth, I want to add a "survival mode" to netplay, in this mode players team up against the computer, players have 200 health hogs, the computer has hogs with only 50 health, however, every time you kill a hog, a new one appears on the map! You have to see how many rounds you will last, perhaps we'll have a leader board.

Anyway, for all of these things we will need to improve AI, these things aren't coming too soon, so don't get all happy, but those are some of my personal plans that I will try to get implemented.

i don't think we'll add voice themes but we will add many new sounds (and hopefully also special effects)
