Seeing the gas grenade untouched for quite some time I just had to play around with it ... digging out one of my old ideas. Here's what it looks like right now:
I'm still not 100% sure about the grenade's effect - right now it just poisons everyone nearby but there might be other effects as well (once they're implemented). The question is just "what should it be?". As this weapon wasn't initially created by me we might change it back to something else too but the overall effect should be something that can be caused by some kind of gas.
So ... I'm asking you now!

My idea for now would be "disorient" (temporary swap hedgehog's controls, e.g. up becomes down, left becomes right).

This isn't just cheese, it's biological warfare! It won't cause an huge amount of damage once the timer reaches zero but it will definitely poison anyone unlucky to be nearby!

I think the cheese shouldn't explode and disappear. It would be funnier, if just makes a toxic cloud affected by the wind (even while the cheese is flying).

You should make it so all hogs in a small radius jump or walk towards the cheese before it explodes or creates gas cloud. They just lurve that cheese!

I think it should make some type of cloud when it explodes. Also, it should sound different when it bounces, more squishy or something like that, not like a mine
and when it bounces it shouldn't bounce quite so well since it is cheese after all.

I think that upon exploding, the cheese should both infect anyone nearby with poison: the poisonous gas spews out of the cheese and goes upwards covering a medium area. The gas floating is affected by wind before it dissipates.

The grenade should leave a trace that poison all hedgehog nearby. Then exploit and poison again.

Here's a couple suggestions:
You could make the affected hogs pass out for their next turn (that hog's next turn).
Possibly give the option to eat the cheese with another button, and be poisoned yourself, but have it so anyone who gets in your radius is also poisoned. It should still end your turn though. Also, the poison that others get from the cloud should be worse than what the hog infects himself with. I still think the self-infecting hog should have normal poison, just make those he infects have like, double, or 1.5x damage per turn.
The cheese could engulf them, poisoning them severely, and immobilizing them in cheese for one of their turns.
The cheese could be bait for a "Starving Mouse" item or something, which will eat any hedgehog in its path up to the cheese, doing 100 damage, but will take two turns to execute, and will require the party you'd like to hurt not moving. And then it could just *also* poison those it hits.
The cheese could make hedgehogs sick, and in addition to poisoning them, could make it so they move slower and can't jump, possibly just temporarily.
Anyhow, I was just throwing some ideas out there, I hope they help some. I like the disease cloud idea too, and wind could affect where it is, provided it's not affected by gravity.

Another idea is that it could make the infected hogs temporarily be on their own team, and be "berserk" as in they are controlled by the AI and will attack the nearest hog until they take damage. In this way it could also be used on yourself as an offensive strategy. As for the mechanic, I like jamei's idea of it leaving a cloud in its wake as it flys, and exuding a wind affected cloud for a few turns. Oh yes, and I like the squishy noise part, essential!

idea: don't let the cheese explode and let the poison keep affecting the nearby hogs unless one of them cuts the cheese with a knife weapon you could make.

I can't think of a sensible effect for it besides poisoning.
Wrt how the gas should behave, it should stream continuously when the cheese is in flight, with perhaps a final big (wind-affected) puff when the cheese explodes.

I like the idea with mixing up the controls for let's say the next time the sick hedgehog(s) is(are) selected. Of course the poisoning is a MUST.
And maybe you should add some effects to it similar to those in Worms - the worm (in our case - hedgehog) becomes green and the expression on its face tells us that it really IS sick.
Some coughing would be nice too.

Orr... The knife weapon could be called the "defuser Knife" and You can throw it at mines or explosive barrels and defuse them.
may also work on the old limburger if it doesn't explode.

When I see the cheese I think it should behave more like the petro-bomb: splatter against the wall on impact and release gas for several turns.

I think if you're going to actually implement this weapon, it should operate differently to a grenade. Perhaps you simply throw it and it will stay where it landed for three or four turns, with an aura of green stink that poisons any hog who passes through the vicinity. With each passing turn, the cheese itself decomposes, turning progressively greener and more disgusting, gradually breaking down into nothing.

or you can make it a item that can be hit like a barrel bu relese gas whenever it bumps into something (like barels that get smoky).

I think that a infected hog should throw up making a slippery ground (or is it too disgusting?).
