Do an annual contest where horrible hedgewars shots are placed in categories and win awards, just like http://wse.worms2d.info/index.php

Wow, this is indeed a very good idea. Smile
Certainly a good motivation to post more demos online.
Well until someone has such a contest set up, I suggest we just post demos of horrible shots for the lulz. Smile

At the moment, I do not have any good (or bad, depending on your viewpoint ^_^) recordings to share but I keep this idea in my mind. I’d post the demo on http://www.hedgewars.org/demos then.

I just see a small practical problem now. If it’s really just about one really, really stupid shot and it happens around minute 20 in the demo you have to watch 20 minutes of the demo until it finally happens. Which can be really annoying. I am aware that you can fast forward by holding the [S] key but it just around doubles (?) the replay speed. It’s not fun holding down the [S] key for 10 minutes, right?

1) record the relevant hilarity using the in-built hedgewars' recorder.
2) upload to youtube or rawrfightthepowersiteofyourchoosing
3) post a link to your video
4) ???
5) profit

Also, since the speed accelerates faster and faster the longer you hold down s, you don't have to hold it down for anywhere near that long.

But I'll try to add a /ff command.

Mikade, what’s the point of demos if everyone is going to screenrecord anyways?

I never understood why screenrecordings were ever added to Hedgewars. To me, it just is completely pointless since we already have demos. What’s wrong about demos?

Demos:

  • Usually small files, tens of kibibytes at maximum. This is small enough that even the www.hedgewars.org admins are willing to host them.
  • are available immediately
  • you can move the viewport as you wish
  • the same graphic settings as you wish apply
  • the interface language is the language of your interface
  • The only real drawback is that you can’t jump to a certain point in time

Screenrecordings:

  • usually very large files, hundreds of mebibytes usually. This is at least 10240 times more than a demo of the same length would need.
  • these also need to be encoded first, which costs time on my low-end machine
  • you are forced to keep Hedgewars running until the video is encoded. If you leave earlier, the video ist lost.
  • you can’t move the viewport, you are totally dependent on the player’s view. Everything the player did not show is invisible to you, too.
  • you can’t change the view settings
  • the interface language is the language of the player’s interface
  • The only real plus I see for now that you can jump to a certain point as you wish

The best solution would be clearly to add the possibility to jump to a point in time in a demo. It would be nice to see if in future the engine would be generally be capable to do more stuff with demos. Like “jump to next/previous turn”, “go backwards” and the typical minimal features you find in every video player. I would especially be in favor of adding a command-line parameter to the hwengine which causes the hwengine to start the demo straight from the given point in time.

I noticed that the fast forward feature is actually not awful at all. Nemo is right. You can go from 0:00 to 5:00 in a matter of seconds. So it is not impractical to share the entire demo with the time attached. Smile

So I guess if I see some hilarious mistake, I just upload the entire demo like I planned before. It’s the simplest solution. I will only post demos of Internet games, never local games. I still do have not have any demos of epic fails, sorry. Sad Smiley

Also the whole screenrecording thing does not work for me. I guess I’ll open another thread for that problem.

Hello again. I finally have posted the first failures:

I suggest to everyone who wants to participate in Worst Shot Ever to upload the demos on the demo page and to write the time when the fail happened into the demo description and to prepend “WSE: ” before the title (“WSE” stands for “Worst Shot Ever”).

Video Recording has many plus sides.

Demo: Requires Hedgewars' Engine to be installed to watch.
Video: Doesn't require Hedgewars to watch. It can also be uploaded to Youtube.

It can also save you big bucks since you don't have to buy a screen recorder such as FRAPS to record videos for hedgewars and you don't have to go about compressing the files.

Accepted.

Not accepted.
While it is true that Hedgewars “saves you big bucks”, your assumption that you’d have to rely on commercial propritiary software if Hedgewars wouldn’t have this feature is false. To proof this claim, I present you a incomplete list of free softwares which are screen recorders:

and you don't have to go about compressing the files.

True, but it also holds true for some of the screen recorders I just mentioned, recordMyDesktop, for example. So again the question arises which gap Hedgewars was trying to fill.

Overall, I better stop complaining now about a feature in Hedgewars just because I don’t need it. Other players may indeed find it useful, since your first argument is indeed not stupid. YouTube has around 4000 matches on the word “Hedgewars”—OMG, that’s a lot! I wasn’t aware that there is a such high demand on bandwith-wasting videos. Wink Smiley
