When is 0.9.10 arriving?

Hello guys,

First I want to take a couple of seconds to rant about something that irritates me. I follow a lot of projects to see how they're coming along, and I'm constantly seeing posts on blogs, in FAQs, in forums and pretty much everywhere else, concerning people asking when version X is going to be released.

These posts are usually something along the lines of "Don't ask when it will be released" or "It will be released when it's done" or "Asking for a release date will result in a ban".

Well what a lovely way to treat people who are eager to use your product. I see a whole collection of percieved justifications for it, they usually go something like this..

It's rude to ask when something is done
It's irritating to hear it all the time
If we give you a release date and miss it you will be mad!
We don't know when it will be finished
So on

If you have the emotional hardiness of a 12 year old, these might be valid reasons, frankly if I say that I'm going to release someting on a specific date and miss that date I really couldn't care less if a small number of idiots get their knickers in a bunch, the intelligent users will be the ones to benefit and they'll also be the ones who cut you some slack if you miss a date.

So in summary, grow up, stop being so damn pretentious, and unless you have money riding on something (then its understandable) just tell people when you hope things are going to be done.

When will 0.9.10 be released?


Ok so here's the status of 0.9.10

So far all the technical stuff is pretty much done. There are a couple of bugs with animations on the rope that need to be fixed. The last large task is the schemes menu, the menu itself is technically finished, but it needs restyling. I also want to restyle the network game page to make it more obvious that there's an official server to join. (the whole server list thing is confusing in that regard).

Once these two small tasks are complete, we want to do some testing. Uncorr wants to do a week of testing at least, I want to do less, maybe a few days. I'm hoping that the styling will be finished this weekend along side the rope bug fixing. Leaving us with a "release candidate". Once we have that, we'll test the release candidate until mid week at least, so maybe Wednesday. If we find bugs, we have to fix them and test again.. depending on the severity of the bug, this might take 5 minutes or we might want to test for another day. If no bugs are found we may be able to release on thursday, if they are the release will come after they are confirmed fixed.

Either way, it's very close. I'm hoping for a release next week some time before friday. But we'll see.

There are some new features in there that no one really knows about yet, I can't wait for you guys to discover them. :)

Concerning "whwen it will be done"... If I don't see those questions, I loose motivation on working on a project. Feature requests, bug reports & question on the status are sign that people are interested in your project and they are very welcome.

Beside that, I'm going to try out SVN version these days. Hope I'll be able to help with bug hunting. Wink Smiley

There are some people who rope-jump on others as an attack (throwing them in the water) and they still have not used their turn. Will this be fixed?

Rope is a utility. Unless you limit all utilities to one usage per turn it will always do that.

OK???

Try throwing a grenade straight up while standing on a slope, and jump away. The grenade won't bounce left (western slope) or right (eastern slope), like it should, it will bounce a few times straight up, until it lands and goes still in the exactly same spot you were at while throwing it.

Another example: try standing below a non-straight "ceiling" and throw a grenade straight up.

Andrey, I see. No socks for you Big Grin But have in mind this - too much realism in such games doesn't do good.

Soooo from what I remember about angle of incidence = angle of reflection (not including gravity) - shouldn't the 1st picture have the grenade go more at an upper right angle?

Anyway, yeah. that has kind of bugged me on basketball court too.

Might not be that hard to fix actually, if we have a bit of time before release, will have to look over that.

Don't listen to nemo, he doesn't understand what he says. It's very hard task to find real incidence angle. We had two tries to do that during hedgewars history, both failed.

I did in fact look at it for a couple of hours. And. ugh.

Although, I usually don't since it can fail, and seems a waste of rope now that rope is refireable. I prefer to use shotgun/deagle.

But if I'm in a situation where it actually has decent chance of success, absolutely. Smile

oh. and just to be clear, while unc0rr was right and I didn't know how it worked, and there's no way I'd hold up a release for it, that doesn't mean I've given up on it Big Grin

Personally, I think it could possibly be done "good enough" by maintaining and updating an array of planes.

The rope was always used as a weapon if enemys placed themselfs bad...
whats wrong with that? If you`re good you can use it to slide an opponent into water and make a moove in the rest of your roundtime... if you`re not good you cant, its tactic, not more!

Yes, but for example at the 1st turn it can be really unfair.

Yup, I kinda made that pic wrong, but were too lazy to correct. Let's keep it up, as a proof of my idiocy.

As for rope. It's a part of the game. When the terrain and positioning of hogs is favorable for rope kills (which doesn't happen all that often), I also like to try it.

nearly every weapon can be unfair, too in the first round, for example 2 pumpguns can kill 2 hedges...

Then there should be a neutral or random way of deciding who has first turn.

I have an idea!
First turn inflicts half damage...how about that?
(though it won't work with drowning)

My idea is at the 1st turn to activate "No Fire" .

Mkk-Bote, why's that? The aim of the game is to kill all the bustards on the screen Smile Why loose a whole turn for that? And besides - first turn for who? The very first one (unfair) of the first of each team (fair)?

Oh please, half-damage? No damage (that's just delaying, someone still will be first to deal damage)? If, you're playing competitively, then you just let the other player start the game in the next match.

Only solution for Your "problem" would be the introduction of simultaneous turns ;P

it won't work because of latency problems.

It won't work because the game is turn-based.If you change that it'll change the whole game's concept and many things will have to be adjusted.

Postponing your death won't do. It'll still come and get you. Big Grin

The current projected release date is the 25th. Tiyuri is taking a (well deserved) vacation and he has to finalize the artwork and make the windows builds.

It was discussed in the Heads for Windows treads.

It's better to tell people that "It's done when it's done" than give them a date and then miss it.

Well, as I understand it, there were only a few minor things preventing release (since all other features had been put on hold).
Those were a server crash and the teleport bug (my bad on that one), and the schema screen.
unc0rr was not around last week to review and check in. He quickly fixed the server crash, and found the teleport bug by last sunday.

That completed all the code changes. However, that pushed out testing and art, and Tiy had to go. So. The original deadline was well intentioned and not meant to keep people in suspense.

Look on bright side. 0.9.10 is essentially done at this point, so we have plenty of time to bug test prior to release Smile

who are these people who are complaining that it hasn't been completed yet? Aghh (play the nightly versions or contribute) who are these people that are whining about the rope and cake and every other weapon being unfair? (life is unfair - learn to play better Wink Smiley ) i think this game is great and is getting better all the time. the only thing i would change at this point is adding an option to allow the use of all weapons at any time. regardless, i think the people behind this project are doing an awesome job and deserve whatever bug testing and vacation time they need. Straw Hat with Facial!
