"worked" the first time, then stopped working

Hi there,
I just installed Hedgewars and the first time I clicked on start quick game it started without a problem. However ingame was very very slow and I had to kill it with the WINXP task manager.
After that I went to the options and reduced the resolution and quality. However the game didn't start any more after that, and crashed with
0: Console write: Loading C:/Programme/Hedgewars 0.9.13/share/hedgewars/Data/Graphics/Splash [flags: 7]...
0: failed due to size
I already tried uninstalling and deleting the .hedgewars directory but I still get the same error after reinstalling.
My computer is really old so it wouldn't surprise me if the game doesn't work on it, but I'm really confused why it worked the first time

Thanks that worked. So I guess the first time I got lucky and loaded the landscape with the smallest splash.. Anyway game is still unplayable, so I'll be back once I can afford a new computer
I don't know much about Windows performance optimisation, but what graphics card are you using?
Check to see if there are more recent versions of the driver, and also try setting the XP settings to optimise for performance (turns off all that annoying blobby interface too)
Also, 800x600 is reasonably playable, if you zoom in and out (mousewheel) and usually does ok even if the computer is doing software rendering.

None, we are talking 7 year old Notebook with some shared memory shit graphic. I've already tried 640x480 and I get like 5 fps
Well, I've tested such a laptop, intel chip, shared memory, computer from about 7 years back, like yours.
Admittedly I was testing under ubuntu, but I got acceptable performance, around 30fps w/ reduced quality and at 800x600.
Can you be more specific as to the chip? Also, can you give the driver version #? And, did you try optimising for performance in windows settings yet?
A 2003 computer should be able to handle this.

Thanks, now it actually works. My windows was already configured for performance but there was indeed a new driver for my via/s3g kn400/kn500 card (that also changed the card's name to via/s3g unichrome igp). Also full screen mode gives another 30 fps and doesn't drop the frame rate to 2 when selecting a new weapon with right click. Might try booting up ubuntu tommorrow to see if it works even better.
frame rate should not drop on right click if in Reduce Quality mode. curious.
but. good that you got it working.

It drops by about 30 frames in fullscreen (from 90) and to 2 frames in window mode (from 60). Placing a girder drops framerate to 2 frames even in fullscreen
Er. Right click w/ reduce quality enabled? I guess the reason I harp on that was that it was the opening animation which was issue on wimpy HW.
As for girder placing. It slows down even when not doing anything? Issue there could perhaps be slowness due to opacity?
You mind experimenting by modifying the girder placement image? (the blue one)
That would be:
Data/Graphics/Hedgehog/amGirder.png
Test with it set to an empty transparent png of the same dimensions, or perhaps one that is a simple, non-translucent, circle.
Could also try a tiny 1 by 1 px png, I think that would work too...

Yes indeed
Tried that, no success
I'm afraid I don't understand "non-translucent". A circle with no filling?
Nope same problem. The ingame result is a 512x512 non-transparent area, even though the png is only 1x1 pix. When I earlier replaced the blue circle with the png from the desert eagle, the gun's image was repeated to fill that 512x512 area
Anyways, I'm really impressed by the good support you are offering nemu!
