Help needed: MA on open-source game development

Hi there

My name is Julian Schönbächler, I'm a programmer and professional game designer from Switzerland working at Koboldgames, a small Swiss game studio. I am currently doing my Master's degree in Game Design at the University of the Arts in Zurich and I would kindly ask for your help. I hope I am posting this in the right place, as it would be great for me to reach a fair bit of the community.

TL;DR - In my research work for my MA thesis I focus on open-source game development, its structure and hierarchy as well as the motivation of the people involved in the project. I try to explore how game design processes function on games that are developed in the open and how collaboration on a project might serve an educational purpose. If you got 15min on your hands to fill out a survey on this topic, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you! To the survey...

I believe I first came into contact with open-source games in my early secondary school days, when I was searching for free games on the internet to play on our old and slow Mac computer. SuperTuxKart is one of the games that still has a special place in my heart. To this day, it is a free and open-source game that receives a good portion of attention and is in active development. The open-source gaming community was also the place where I took my first steps in my game design career. An environment that provides you with free access to source code and assets, techniques and tutorials. One that actively encourages people to become contributors and joining a community. For me that was the best insight into how game development works and all the aspects it consists of I could ever get.

help with building hw on windows

Hello! I am trying to discover whether my meager programming skills can be useful to this project. I have many years of boring business app development, mostly in c#, only ancient experience with c++, c and pascal, and the size of this project is quite daunting.

I got vcpkg bootstrapped and the libraries built. (yay!)

When I try to build hw (C:\hg\hedgewars\trunk\tools\build_vcpkg.bat) I am running into "cannot open include file 'SDL.h': no such file or directory".

Digging into this is tough for me (because there are so many layers for me to learn), but I do see a file "C.includecache" (in folder C:\Hg\hedgewars\trunk\misc\libphyslayer\CMakeFiles\physlayer.dir) that was somehow generated with an incorrect folder path for SDL.h:

Quote:

SDL.h
C:/Hg/hedgewars/trunk/misc/libphyslayer/SDL.h

I am brand new to cmake and nmake, but I am guessing that the problem might be in the CMakeLists.txt file under C:\Hg\hedgewars\trunk\misc\libphyslayer? I see these lines

Quote:

find_package(SDL2 REQUIRED CONFIG)
include_directories(${SDL2_INCLUDE_DIRS})

which I assume somehow result in setting up the c compiler to look in the right folders for #include....

I figure I am out of my league here, but thought I could at least get this project to compile. And I feel like I am close. But I do not understand what I am doing wrong.

Any help or pointers, or kind words telling me I am oh-so-far from getting it to build, would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Shirt/Pants/Hoodie/Merch Official design thread

To say I have a fully-fledged thought here would be a lie...
Basically, I have created this thread to bring together the design/art savvy Hedgewarriors who have Hedgewars designs, particularly for merch.
I have recently finished designing a Hedgewars hoodie through Custom Ink. Their website has very nice customer service and a really nice UI. Anywho, showed my finished product to the Irc servers for opinions. burp recommended talking about it here for people who would be interested in buying some.

Here is where things get tricky...
I am by no means capable of designing merch on a massive scale. To do that, you need money, which I'm not exactly swimming in. Moreover, I'm not entirely sure how the devs feel about merch for Hedgewars anyway. They've said there isn't anything stopping me, but I don't know where one would start on a business level like that.

so...

This is just a "you've got a design for merch? put it here" but as of this moment, there is nothing dictating merch at this moment. This thread can also be used as a poll for which designs we like best and if we were to hypothetically make merch, that is where we would be. Again, I haven't really thought this through, so I apologize for that. With that said, piece together what little sense this thread makes, and discuss it in the comments.
