Sudden Death music proposals

Hi!
A very old problem of Hedgewars is the fact that it does not play any music whatsoever when entering Sudden Death mode.

The issue was brought up here:
https://code.google.com/p/hedgewars/issues/detail?id=558

0.9.21 comes with custom Sudden Death music support for themes. However, there is no default. If theme.cfg does not set the sd-music variable, there is still just silence. Too bad that ALL default themes do currently not have this variable set, which means you will still have silence in Sudden Death for all default themes.

Apparently the developers prefer silence over hell.ogg. I understand that some folks do not like hell.ogg as Sudden Death music, but do you really want to have silence more? I can’t imagine that many folks think that way, that’s why I creating this thread so you can share your opinions.

Now I want to ask people here which default Sudden Music do you want to have.

If hell.ogg is so hated as Sudden Death music, I have a different suggestion: Simply use the music the theme already used as non-sudden-death music. That would at least solve the ugly problem of silence without involving hell.ogg every time.

Another suggestion, but not practical at the moment, would be to find someone to create a “default” sudden death music which is not used by any of the default themes already as the non-sudden-deah music.

Another solution would be to assign each theme a sudden death music independently.
I propose this track as Sudden Death music for the Jungle and Bamboo themes: SDOriental_v1.hwp (Source with LMMS files: http://opengameart.org/content/oriented) (License: CC-0)
I already use it in Ninja_v2, which I just released.

Pseudo 3D World

1)Make the border image bigger / border takes more space on map.
2)Hedgehog doesn't sit on top of the border but instead 1/2 of the pixels in.
3)Somehow break the map into squares and store them so that when an explosion happens you redraw that square and re-apply the border.

Would this be hard for someone with fair knowledge of C, C++ but no knowledge of python to implement? Is this even possible without making the game "too heavy" with all the redraws and such?
Has anyone ever tried to do something similar?

EDIT: 4) option to remove explosion border (not related to border.png)

Apologies!

I'm sorry for interrupting your lunch.

I am Myst. I have been a shoppa player for quite long actually, about uhh, 4 years? Well, maybe.

My departure on the previous winter has caused Randy to manage the Shoppa Cup alone. I'm sorry, Randy! I'm not the one who wanted to go, it was really a technical issue.

I'll be buying a new laptop (it means I can play again!) in next two months. After that, I'm ready to kick your ass and develop things into Shoppa once again.

But now, I'll be on here frequently,on the forums. Also, it is nice to see Nexus/nexia or whatever his name stays on the top of the records. Aye, me be proud o' ye!

Freezing last enemy hog in Highlander

Hi! I recently played Highlander in 0.9.20 and froze the last hedgehog of the enemy.

This should have given me another turn which also happened but the weapons menu was empty in the next turn! :O
There was not even skip, which I think should almost always be there.

Now I wonder if this is intentional for some gameplay reasons or if this is just a bug.

But no matter if it is intentional or not, skip needs to be in the weapons menu no matter what, you don’t want the others to wait the full turn time several times when it is not really neccessary.

I uploaded the demo of said game here:
http://www.hedgewars.org/node/5965

Edit: I have just tried to reproduce it in Git e702010… and I wasn’t able to. It seems it has been resolved. I guess this means you will be able to safely freeze the last hog in Highlander in 0.9.21.
And this also means it was clearly not intentional. Smile

New terminology regarding themes

Hi!
I propose to use two new terms for themes in the hope that this makes discussion of themes a bit easier.

Those terms I propose distinguish two types of themes.

Defintions:

  • Full theme”: Defined as a theme which can be played as standalone theme to generate random maps and as a background for image maps. It does not matter how fancy the theme is, as long you can generate random maps, it is a full theme.
  • Background theme”: Defined as a theme which can not be used to create random maps, but it provides enough material to be used as a theme for an image map. It is called “background theme” because the provided material usually consists of mostly background elements.

Examples for full themes in 0.9.20: Nature, Bamboo, City. Basically all themes you can select in the game menu of 0.9.20.

Examples for background themes in 0.9.20: Eyes, Cake, Planes. All those thems are used by the image maps of the same name. You cannot select those themes directly in 0.9.20, only by editing the config file this is possible.
